Our partnership with Kura Kai

At Misfit Garden, we talk a lot about reducing food waste, but there’s another part of the story we don’t always talk about enough.

What happens to the surplus produce that doesn’t make it into our boxes?

Some of it goes to an incredible organisation called Kura Kai, and honestly, they deserve the spotlight.

What is Kura Kai?

Kura Kai is a New Zealand charity built on a simple but powerful idea:

“Whānau cooking for whānau.”

They work with high schools across Aotearoa, placing freezers on-site and filling them with nutritious, home-cooked meals made by local volunteers.

These meals are then shared with students and whānau who could use a little extra aroha and support, quietly, respectfully, and without fuss.

It’s not just about food. It’s about manaakitanga, caring for people, showing up for your community, and making sure no one is left out.

How it works (and why it matters)

Kura Kai raises funds to provide freezers to schools, then builds a network of volunteers who cook meals to keep them stocked.

Schools themselves identify where support is needed and distribute meals in a way that protects dignity and connection.

Even more powerful? Rangatahi are part of it too. Learning to care for their community, gaining life skills, and being part of something bigger than themselves.

In a time where the cost of living continues to rise, initiatives like this make a real, immediate difference. Not just filling puku, but supporting education, wellbeing, and connection.

Where Misfit Garden fits in

From time to time, we have surplus produce, perfectly good food that simply needs a home.

Instead of letting it go to waste, we pass it on to Kura Kai, where it can become part of these meals going into community freezers.

It’s a pretty special full-circle moment:

  • Food that might’ve been wasted
  • Turned into meals
  • Shared with whānau
  • Through a network built on kindness

No fuss. No big headlines. Just people looking after people.

Why this matters to us

We’ve always believed that food should be eaten, not wasted.

But more than that, it should be shared.

Kura Kai reminds us that the impact of food goes far beyond what’s on the plate. It’s about connection, dignity, and showing up for each other in quiet, meaningful ways.

To the Kura Kai team, thank you.
For the care, the mahi, and the aroha you pour into communities across Aotearoa.

We’re just stoked to play a small part.
