Cheesy Onion Chips

Cheesy Onion Chips

Crispy, cheesy, and shockingly addictive - these oven-baked onion crisps are the ultimate no-fuss snack.

Did you find an onion lurking at the back of your cupboard and need some inspiration? We've got just the thing. These crispy oven-baked onion chips are the ultimate low-effort, high-reward snack.

No deep fryer, no fancy ingredients - just a humble onion, a bit of olive oil, and a generous sprinkle of cheese. Pop them in the oven and boom: crunchy, salty, cheesy goodness that’ll have everyone hovering by the tray.

This recipe is part of the campaign with Love Food Hate Waste for 'no veggie left behind'. We're all on a mission to fight food waste, one tasty bite at a time

Ingredients:

  • 1–2 large onions
  • Olive oil, for brushing
  • Cheese, grated (we reckon mature cheddar is good, but use what you fancy!)
  • Your favourite seasoning (e.g. garlic powder, paprika, cracked pepper, chilli flakes, etc)
  • Salt, to taste

Method:

  1. Preheat your oven to 150°C (no fan).
  2. Layer your cheese onto a lined baking tray.
  3. Slice your onions into disks about 5mm thick. Place them onto the cheesy tray.
  4. Brush each onion ring lightly with olive oil and sprinkle with your choice of seasonings. Don’t be shy!
  5. Bake for 20–25 minutes or until golden brown and crisp. Keep an eye on them during the last few minutes - they go from golden to burnt quickly.
  6. Let them cool slightly on the tray to crisp up even more.

Tips:

  • Use red onions for a sweeter chip, or brown onions for a sharper bite.
  • Serve them up with a dipping sauce or scatter over salads for crunch.
  • If you’re into spice, a pinch of cayenne or chipotle powder takes them to the next level.
