What's in season this Winter
Winter called. It brought snacks.
Winter is actually one of New Zealand's best seasons for produce, If winter gets a bad rap for anything, it's probably the weather.
Cold mornings.
Frozen windscreens.
That moment you consider wearing your duvet to work.
But fruit and vegetables?
Winter absolutely shows off.
This is the season where vegetables get sweeter, citrus is bursting with flavour, and hearty dinners make a triumphant return.
Here's what's looking particularly good right now...
🥦 Broccoli
The dependable mate.
Always turns up. Always pulls its weight.
Roast it, steam it, chuck it in a stir-fry or cover it in cheese. (We're not judging.)
It's packed with fibre, vitamin C and somehow manages to make you feel like you've got your life together.
🌱 Spring Onions
Tiny. Mighty. Surprisingly versatile.
They're like herbs that decided to become vegetables.
Sprinkle them over soups, noodles, omelettes or pretty much anything that needs a little fresh crunch.
🤍 Cauliflower
The chameleon.
Soup?
✔️
Roasted?
✔️
Curry?
✔️
Mashed instead of potato?
Also somehow ✔️.
Cauliflower has quietly become one of winter's biggest overachievers.
🍠 Kūmara
Peak comfort food.
Roasted wedges.
Mash.
Soup.
Tray bakes.
If winter had an official mascot, it'd probably be kūmara wearing a tiny scarf.
🍐 Packham Pears
Sweet, juicy and at their best right now.
Leave them on the bench until the neck gives slightly when you press it.
That's when the magic happens.
(Yes... pears have necks. We looked it up.)
🍊 Winter Citrus
Oranges, mandarins, lemons...
Winter is citrus season, and honestly, we're here for it.
Vitamin C, fresh juice and the smell of peeling a mandarin that somehow takes you straight back to school lunchboxes.
Eating with the seasons.
One of the best things about eating seasonally is that nature tends to know what it's doing.
Winter gives us hearty vegetables for warming dinners, crisp greens to brighten things up, and citrus just when everyone starts thinking about sniffles.
Convenient, really.
So if your Misfit Box arrives looking particularly wintery this week...
Lean into it.
Soup season doesn't last forever.
