Big news Misfit Garden (that's us!) are officially expanding to the South Island.

After years of delivering rescued, seasonal fruit and vegetables to households across the North Island, we’re thrilled to announce that our boxes are now available throughout the South Island too. That means more families can enjoy fresh produce at great value, and even more perfectly good food can be saved from going to waste.

This expansion marks an exciting new chapter in our journey, one that’s all about supporting South Island growers, reducing food waste nationwide, and making sustainable eating easier for everyone in New Zealand.

Our Story: From Misfit Produce to a Nationwide Solution

Misfit Garden began with a simple idea: too much amazing food is thrown away just because it doesn’t look “perfect”.

Every year, tonnes of fresh fruit and vegetables are rejected by traditional retail channels due to cosmetic quirks, surplus harvests, or changing market demands. Yet these same products are just as delicious, nutritious, and worthy of being enjoyed.

So we (Jen & Sofia) built Misfit Garden to change that.

By working directly with local farmers and growers, we rescue this “misfit” produce and pack it into seasonal boxes delivered straight to your door. Our customers get affordable, high-quality fruit and veg and growers get a reliable outlet for produce that might otherwise go to waste.

It’s better for households, better for farmers, and better for the planet.

Now, we’re bringing that same model to the South Island.

Supporting South Island Growers, Locally

A huge part of our South Island launch is our commitment to working with local growers.

Rather than shipping everything from the North Island, we’re building direct relationships with farmers across regions like Canterbury, Otago, Southland, Tasman, and Marlborough.

This means:

• More South Island produce in South Island homes

• Shorter transport distances where possible

• Better returns for local farmers

• Fresher fruit and vegetables for our customers

Just like in the North Island, we’ll be sourcing seasonal surplus, cosmetically imperfect, and overstock produce, helping South Island growers recover value from crops that might otherwise be left in the field or discarded.

Introducing Our South Island Warehouse & Dispatch

To support this expansion, we’ve established a dedicated South Island warehouse and dispatch operation.

This local hub allows us to:

• Pack South Island orders closer to where the produce is grown

• Improve delivery times across the island

• Reduce unnecessary freight miles

• Scale our impact with regional growers

From here, our team carefully packs each Misfit Box before sending it out to homes across the island, from Christchurch and Dunedin to Invercargill, Nelson, and beyond.

It’s a big step forward in our mission to operate locally while thinking nationally.
