Why Buy 'Misfit'?

Chances are, if you've made it this far then you have a pretty good idea of what we're about. Veggies. Ugly. Save. Yum. But wait, you intrepid internet reader! There is so much more than that!
You will of course be aware of the 1.3 billion tons of food that goes to waste globally every year. But did you know that a HUGE amount of fresh produce is wasted, simply because it's not pretty enough for the demands of the supermarkets?

Well this is where we step in. We're on a mission to reduce food waste in New Zealand by bringing you, our customers, closer to our Nation’s farmers and growers.

 Can we change the world?

We all like 'pretty' food; marble glazed donuts, the PERFECT poached egg. Humans like beautiful. Beautiful food sells; thats a fact. But what about the underdog? When is it his time to shine?! The carrot with 2 legs? The kumara with a few extra kobbles? With estimates that 1 in 9 people in the world are suffering from chronic malnourishment, its now even more important that we start being less picky.
EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL FRUITS AND VEGGIES!
*
It is estimated that Kiwi's throw away $872 million worth of food each year. $827 Million!! This same amount of food could feed 200,000 people for a year. (Thats the population of Taupo 5 times over!)  And with 25% of the World's fresh water supply being used to grow food that is never eaten, now is the time to face up to the problem and help make a change.

Our mission is to help reduce this food waste, by buying the surplus and unwanted veggies - and getting them into everyday Kiwi households.

Why Buy Misfit?

Help Farmers

Unwanted produce ends up wasted either in landfill, as animal feed or ploughed back into the land. Buying misfit fruit & veg helps farmers sell more of their crop and plan ahead for future growing seasons.

 Save Water

It's pretty simple. Wasting food = wasting water. When you throw away an apple or a carrot, it is the same as throwing away all the water that went into growing it. Water is essential in food production, which means that food waste is basically a massive contributer to water wastage. Did you know that the average person throws away 77 tomatoes a year. That's the equivalent of 10 baths tubs of water!

Help Charities

We donate all our surplus and extra produce to charities. By purchasing one of our Misfit boxes, you are actively providing food for those in need. We are proud suppliers of Taupo Baptist Church & Love Bank – two fab organisations that cook and make meals for those in need. We also donate our surplus fruit to the two Kai Pantries in town. If you are a charity or food bank, and would like to receive donations, please get in touch.

Save Money

We proudly rescue and save perfectly imperfect produce that would be unsuitable or not up to supermarket standards. We transfer these savings over to you, by giving you the best price possible on your weekly veggie shop.

Eat Healthily

Vegetables are an important part of healthy eating and provide a source of many nutrients, including potassium, fibre, folate (folic acid) and vitamins A, E and C. Eating plenty of fruits and veggies may help reduce the risk of many diseases, including heart disease, high blood pressure, and some cancers. Basically, veggies are natures medicine! Plus, fruits and especially vegetables are very low in calories and fat, which means you can eat more to keep you feeling full without worrying about those extra calories or fat.
